    A 250 MW Bujagali hydro power plant is in operation and the full commissioning was on 8th October 2012. Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development is mandated to “Establish, Promote the development, strategically manage and safe guard the rational and sustainable exploitation and utilization of energy and mineral resources for social and economic development”. BEL the contractor, Government of Uganda, and the World Bank started construction with an aim of increasing power in Uganda. In this regard the Bujagali Hydro Power project was commissioned by his Excellency the president of Uganda. Partial commissioning of the 200 MW was done in two phases. The first was done by his excellency the vice president the second by the Prime Minister and the full commissioning was on 8th October 2012 The coming of Bujagali has increased electricity generation capacity and also access to modern energy in the country
